Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough, scaly patches caused by cumulative sun exposure. They are considered precancerous because a small percentage can develop into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated.

Appearance

They often feel like sandpaper and may be pink, red, or the same color as surrounding skin. Common locations include the face, ears, scalp, neck, and backs of the hands.

Treatment and prevention

Dermatologists can treat AKs with cryotherapy, topical field treatments, photodynamic therapy, or other methods. Strict sun protection helps prevent new lesions.
