Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common condition that causes red, scaly, itchy patches, most often on the scalp (dandruff), face (especially around the nose, eyebrows, and ears), and chest.

Management

• Antifungal shampoos and washes (containing ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione)
• Gentle skin care and avoidance of harsh products
• Prescription topical antifungals or low-strength corticosteroids for flares when needed

It tends to be chronic with periods of improvement and flare. Consistent use of appropriate products usually keeps it under control.
